What You Need to Know

Tours are delivered by a team of Heritage Volunteers. Our guides are all volunteers and without them giving up their time the tours would not be possible. Please treat them with respect.

Unless otherwise stated, Tunnel Tours start and finish at the Ouseburn Farm, next to the Cluny (bottom of Stepney Bank) on Lime Street, Newcastle NE1 2PQ. We will meet you there and lead you to the Tunnel.

Please check the booking confirmation document we will send you, usually two weeks before the tour. That document will include details of our Ouseburn Valley neighbourhood restaurants and pubs who offer up to 20% discounts on their food to those who have booked a Victoria Tunnel tour. To make the most of your visit we recommend you to visit our neighbouring attractions (including Seven Stories Centre for Children's Books, Stepney Bank Stables, Ouseburn Farm, 36 Lime Street Studios, Wychcraft Furniture and lots of great pubs and cafe bars such as Ernest on Boyd Street, Cumberland Arms, The Cluny, The Free Trade, Tanners Arms, and food outlets to extend your tour into a day out in the Lower Ouseburn Valley).

The Tunnel is a dark, confined space, so we provide hard hats and torches.

The Tunnel is damp and muddy in places. Please wear suitable, closed-toe shoes. High heels are not advisable!

The Tunnel has a constant temperature of 12 degrees C. The walls are limewashed in places. We recommend that you wear a washable, warm jacket.

No animals are allowed in the Tunnel except trained assistance dogs.

The Victoria Tunnel is an unfunded and not-for-profit project. In order to cover its running costs, from April 2013, the following charges apply, regardless of tour length:

Adults: £5 -

 Children under twelve: £2

Children under five: Are free - however, we acknowledge that some under fives may not enjoy the tunnel environment and parents intending to bring under fives should ask in advance (phone 0191 2616596)

Concessions to those on a low-wage may be available if requested at time of booking: £4

Please bring the correct cash on the day of your tour please. Payment by cheque or card cannot be accepted. If requested in advance an invoice can be issued.
