Ouseburn is widely considered the creative and cultural quarter of Newcastle upon Tyne. With its rich industrial background, Ouseburn evolved to become the home of creatives in the 1990s. Today, Ouseburn houses dozens of artists studios and some of the most iconic, historic buildings are home to well-established galleries and creative venues.

The Biscuit Factory

The Biscuit Factory was opened in 2002. It's the largest independent contemporary art gallery in the UK. Set in what was a Victorian warehouse, it hosts a vast range of art from over 200 artists every season.

Northern Print

Northern Print is both an exhibition space and a learning space. With an active programme of printmaking and art courses for adults and children, it's a thriving hub of creative activity. You can use their printmaking facilities through one-off courses as well as through an annual membership.

Jim Edwards at 59 Lime Street

59 Lime Street, Ouseburn, Newcastle upon TyneNE1 2PQ

Jim Edwards is one of the North East's leading artists and is best known for his unique depictions of local landscape and architecture. In 2015, Jim opened his own exhibition space on Ouseburn's Lime Street. This space is both his studio and gallery and is definitely well worth a visit!

SAW is a truly unique art venue. It describes itself as operating 'on the intersection of contemporary art, theological reflection and community activism'.

Mushroom Works

Mushroom Works sits somewhere between gallery and studio space. It's a functional building where artists are able to work and exhibit. Mushroom Works often host gallery open days and special events.

Cobalt Studios is part music venue and nightclub, part art studio, part co-working space. The studios are functional workspaces, so not open to the public as standard.

A building that was once a Flax Mill, 36 Lime Street is now home to over 40 local artists, makers and designers. These studios are something quite special, with their historic setting and community spirit. Look out for special preview openings and events when you can take a look into the artists' spaces.

One weekend every Spring

The Late Shows first started in 2007 and has grown with each year. This event is a collaboration between many venues across Newcastle and Gateshead with Ouseburn playing a significant role in the activities.

See behind the scenes of over 100 artists' studios throughout just one area. The event is designed so you can spend the day hopping from one studio to the next. Oh, and part of the charm is you can have plenty of pit spots at the various pubs and restaurants in Ouseburn.
