Victoria Tunnel

The Victoria Tunnel was built in the 1830s to carry coal under the streets of Newcastle to staiths on the quayside. In 1939 it was opened as an air-raid shelter for Newcastle residents and is now open to the public for pre-booked guided tours.

The Trust has managed Victoria Tunnel since 2010, when it reopened after extensive repairs and safety precautions which was funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and Tyne Wear Partnership.
